With the Covid-19 virus prevalent around the World some people might be interested in the origins of the Quick Response code such as the UK’s  NHS Track and Trace code that we are all meant to scan.

A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode and was invented in 1994 by the Japanese automotive company Denso Wave.  Cash registers back in the 1960’s required the price to be keyed in manually and because of this, many cashiers suffered from numbness in the wrist and carpal tunnel syndrome.
It took Denso Wave a year and a half to develop a QR Code capable of coding about 7,000 numerals with the additional capability to code Kanji characters was finally created. This code could  be read more than 10 times faster than other codes and could hold a great deal of information.
The Quick Response system became popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. Applications include product tracking, item identification, time tracking, document management, and general marketing.
Typically a QR code consists of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device such as a camera, and processed using Reed–Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted. The required data is then extracted from patterns that are present in both horizontal and vertical components of the image.
Today QR codes can use different shapes and colours and even incorporate logos and are an ideal way of advertising.
